Mockingjay Part 1 COUNTDOWN!

WEEK ONE

The Hunger Games fandom is alive once again! IT LIVES!! LIKE THE MOCKINGJAY! We are getting ever so closer to the release of Mockingjay Part 1, and thought that a countdown event is in order. Every Friday starting today we will release a piece about each chapter in Mockingjay along with a bit of media such as the comic above. However, we’re not doing every chapter in the book, only where we think the book will be split. If you read our Mockingjay Mockup you know what exactly that is. That is not to say where it is to be officially split, obviously. We could be completely and terribly wrong, but as patient fans all we can do is speculate. We do hope you enjoy our Mockingjay Part 1 Countdown!

My name is Katniss Everdeen. I am seventeen years old. My home is District 12. I was in the Hunger Games. I escaped. The Capitol hates me. Peeta was taken prisoner. He is thought to be dead. Most likely he is dead. It is probably best if he is dead.

Things have changed drastically. District 12 is gone. Welcome to District 12? Pfft. GOODBYE District 12!! Katniss visits so she can see for herself and to come to grips with reality. The speech above is repeatedly used in Mockingjay, which I thought was a good starting point for the countdown. Doctors recommended that Katniss repeat simple facts about herself to keep her... shall we say... sanity in check.

Katniss not only deals with the physical toll of breaking out of the arena, but also feels responsible for all the deaths in District 12. She is mentally unstable and has an exorbitant amount of grief piled on top of her, IN ADDITION TO her emotional baggage left over from her first games. Side note: This is why people who complain about Katniss’ mental state in MJ drive me insane. Could YOU deal with the emotional toll and PTSD of a seasoned war veteran BEFORE the war even starts at 17 years old?

Everyone is broken, not just Katniss — Beetee, Finnick, Johanna, and Peeta to name a few. Most of them have deeper problems than just their electrical injuries. Everyone is in pieces, yet they have to come out of this war that just started alive and be victorious. It’s a daunting task, especially when Katniss is struggling with accepting the role of The Mockingjay. Peeta had said to her that he didn’t want to be a piece in their games, but it is already apparent that Katniss is another piece — this time in the rebels' games.

All this in the first chapter, and I haven’t even talked about the present that President Snow leaves in Victor’s Village. I would hope that the rose is the focal point to the opening of Mockingjay Part 1 but I suppose time will tell on that one. It will be interesting to see the turmoil of what is happening emotionally and physically to Katniss on her return trip to District 12 without any kind of voice over, but I trust that Francis Lawrence will do a great job of illustrating that to the audience.

What I hope to see the most out of this chapter is the frightening mental instability going on with Katniss during her tour. Upon stumbling upon the stocks and whipping posts Katniss’ hallucinations begin as she fights for control. This is coming from her PTSD that dates back to the beginning of Catching Fire, something we will be seeing a lot of in the next two films. To put it eloquently….. Shit’s about to get REAL.

It also lets you "scan" your area (using your phone camera) to check for other Mockingjay tags and messages other people have left, and allows you to share the photos via Twitter/Facebook!

Entertainment Weekly talks to Francis Lawrence about Julianne Moore and President Coin + Mockingjay Parts 1&2 will have 'two distinct stories'

photo from Entertainment Weekly

Francis Lawrence talks to EW about how Julianne Moore was cast as Alma Coin, and how we will be seeing more of her in the Mockingjay movies compared to the book. Read the article below:
Julianne Moore is a big fan of the Hunger Games series, so much so that she directly approached Mockingjay – Part 1 director Francis Lawrence about securing the role of President Alma Coin, the tenacious leader of District 13 who leads the revolution against the Capitol.

“She actually sort of tracked us down and had an interest in the books through her kids,” Lawrence says. The Golden Globe winner’s interest acted as an audition, he notes.

“She didn’t audition. Once we knew she wanted it, that was it—done,” Lawrence says, laughing. “I sat down with her, she had great ideas, we got along and that was it.”

President Coin—who becomes reluctant allies with Katniss Everdeen in the rebellion’s efforts to overthrow President Snow—was written by author Suzanne Collins through Katniss’s perspective as narrator; she is perceived as ambitious and egotistical. But with Moore’s involvement, Lawrence says, the gray-haired politician’s role in his two-part finale has expanded significantly beyond her portrayal in the bestselling Hunger Games series.

“There’s more of her in this than in the book, and because of that, there’s some development,” Lawrence says. “I think the character has developed into something pretty amazing. And Julianne was a big part of that.”

The Hunger Games:Mockingjay – Part 1 is slated for release on Nov. 21, 2014.
We're very excited that we get to see more of President Coin - the short bit from the teaser where she's strategizing with Plutarch has hinted on that - and it'll be very interesting to see her outside of Katniss' perspective, similar to the additional scenes with President Snow in Catching Fire. What do you guys think?

Entertainment Weekly

Edited to Add: Francis Lawrence also talks to EW about how the first and second Mockingjay movies will be different from each other. Here are some highlights from the article:

On adding scenes that are not in the book:
And there won’t be any major changes from the novel—although Lawrence worked closely with screenwriter Peter Craig, producer Nina Jacobson, and Collins to create new elements that will “surprise even fans of the book.”

“Instead of changing the plot and changing characters what we did was have the opportunity to show scenes that could have been happening at different times in the book,” Lawrence says. “For us it’s world expansion instead of changing things. I think it’s exciting for the fan to see certain things. So we’ve been able to open the world up in this and see some new places. We get to see some new districts this time and the scope gets quite large.”

On splitting the book into two movies:
While Lawrence won’t reveal how he divided the final book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy (“That’s going to be one of the really good surprises,” he says), he shares that the films will have “two different, very distinct stories.”

You can read the whole article here.

If you haven't checked out The Mockingjay Mockup yet, you should! Courtney and Tiffany discuss splitting the book into two movies, including possible omissions and additions!

District 13 Character Posters Revealed

Today has been a roller coaster of a day over in the Capitol. The rebels hacked The Hunger Games twitter and posted a QR code (also found on district13.co.in):

Scanning that code with a QR reader on your phone (note: iPhone users were having difficulty with this process) would get you to the mobile site m.district13.co.in that encouraged users to connect via Twitter or Facebook. The following images are from Jabberjays.net, as we're iPhone users and were unsuccessful with getting through the process.

After entering the Session ID from TheCapitol.PN, you would get this:

That leads you to a main page to unlock hacks. Clicking Reveal D13 Citizens gave you the teaser poster below.

Oooh mysterious.

Then later today, several sites released the posters, revealing characters in the dull blue District 13 uniforms.

How great do these look?

Effie looks great, obviously trying to style the drabby District 13 uniform. Though she wasn't in District 13 in the books, we're glad to see her. And Beetee is confirmed to be wheelchair bound like in the books. Haymitch looks like he's having a tough time sober, and Plutarch is just as stately looking as always, despite the uniform. And Coin is curiously the only one in front of the Mockingjay symbol.

We'll update if we find anymore!
