Mockingjay Part 2 Teaser and Poster - "Remember"

This morning, EW posted the official Mockingjay Part 2 poster and teaser to be shown before Insurgent which comes into theatres this Friday. If you live in the U.S., Canada, or the UK you'll be able to see the teaser!


The teaser is, as we expected, the cycle of Mockingjay logos from the beginning. What's different this time around is the array of quotes from past films leading into a brand new one:

"Tonight, turn your weapons to the Capitol."

Also, if you check out the nice high res poster for the teaser, you'll find a new tagline: "The Fire Will Burn Forever." We're glad that teaser at least has a new quote for the fans to get excited about, but the new tagline is a little curious. Hopefully we will get a little more explanation behind this new tagline in future trailers, but for now we will just enjoy the fact that at long last something Mockingjay Part 2 has been released.

EW Catching Fire Issues with Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and Gale Covers

The new Catching Fire issue is here! It has four different covers and probably hits newsstands Friday. Or, if you are too impatient for that you can buy the digital copy NOW. 

These covers look pretty sweet, and we are definitely getting more psyched day by day as more Catching Fire promotion is being released. We notice many have been concerned over the Gale cover, it's possible it is just the arena background to match all the other covers.  Unless....he's part of the rescue mission? We think the most logical option is that it's just for the sake of matching covers. Check out what Entertainment Weekly had to say about the new issue:

In this week’s cover story, EW goes deep — deep into a Hawaiian jungle, that is, for an exclusive visit to the set ofThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The highly anticipated sequel, in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) pays dearly for sparking unrest in Panem, doesn’t hit theaters until Nov. 22 (though advance tickets went on sale today). But we’ve got all kinds of reporting to whet your appetite. Plus, Katniss, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson),  Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and Finnick (newcomer to the franchise Sam Claflin) all get their own collectible covers.
After a special report from the sweltering set in Hawaii, we head to Santa Monica, where EW reconvened the stars — along with new director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson — for a rollicking conversation about the new movie. Among the subjects? Everything from the decision to “man up” Peeta’s character for the movie to Lawrence’s spectacular fall in Katniss’ wedding dress while the cameras were rolling. The filmmakers also talk about creating new scenes for Plutarch Heavensbee (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), and actress Jena Malone talks about the thrill of playing the ax-wielding tribute Johanna Mason. Despite the easy camaraderie of the crew, everyone took seriously their mission to respect the pained heart of author Suzanne Collins’ sequel. “In every scene we asked ourselves, ‘How would these people feel if they came back to the Hunger Games,’” says Jacobson. “What happens when you come back from these experiences of war, not what happens in a movie when you’ve kicked a lot of ass?”

EW: New Underland Chronicles Covers!

Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the new look for Gregor The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins!

Before The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins not only wrote for TV shows like Clarissa Explains It All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, but she also dreamed up another literary world for a slightly younger set of readers with The Underland Chronicles. The five-book fantasy series follows Gregor, a boy who discovers an underground city that’s home to giant spiders, bats, rats, and cockroaches as he finds himself on a search for his missing father. Like The Hunger Games, Gregor’s adventures explore larger themes, like war, biological warfare, and even genocide. If you missed The Underland Chronicles the first time around, you can get a new edition this summer, and EW has the first look at the cover art.

EW: Three Missing Characters

Who's missing from the Catching Fire film? EW tells us!

Fans of Suzanne Collins’s  words, you can rest easy. The adaptation of the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire will be “very, very true to book,” promises new director Francis Lawrence.

This week’s cover story  describes the whirlwind few weeks that followed once director Gary Ross stepped away from the helm in April. “We were five months from when we needed to start shooting and we had no script and no director,” says producer Nina Jacobson. Once Lawrence came aboard, Jacobson put together her new director with series mastermind Collins to outline the script. Their main task, says Lawrence, was figuring out a way to best distill the novel’s dense first third, during which our hero Katniss Everdeen, home from her victory tour but tormented by the ghosts of war, struggles internally with her next move.

Lawrence says he and Collins were always in agreement about what from the book needed to be distilled, though he was coy about cuts. When asked, for instance, whether we should expect to see Bonnie and Twill — the District 8 runaways Katniss stumbles upon in the woods who first alert her to both the rebellion she inadvertently sparked and the existence of District 13 — he at first demurred. “You’ve got to wait and see,” he urged. But when it was pointed out that there is in fact no Bonnie and Twill listed on the movie’s IMDB page, he gave it up. “Ah, right,” he said with a laugh. On how the movie will now introduce District 13, Lawrence would only say that “it was fun figuring out new ways around things and new ways of doing things.” With Bonnie and Twill gone, so too is the scene of Katniss scaling a tree and then leaping over District 12′s electrified fence. And Darius, District 12′s youngest peacekeeper who intervenes during Gale’s whipping and then sentenced to the life of an Avox, is another who didn’t make the leap from page to screen.

If the loss of Darius bums you out (and it should!), know at least that the filmmakers feel your pain. “It’s as agonizing for us to lose things from the book as it is for a fan,” says producer Nina Jacobson. “I want every single thing in there. But you know what? If you have to give up something in order to give more time to Katniss and Gale or to Effie as she starts to feel a conscience, you make the sacrifices in order to serve the characters and themes that are more essential.”

Very sad, but not surprising as the Avox storyline was cut out in the first film,  and we suspected that Bonnie and Twill might get the boot.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You’ve had an extraordinarily successful year. Is there a moment or decision which makes you particularly proud?
JENNIFER LAWRENCE: Personally, yes. Business-wise no. I don’t think I’ve ever done that. No matter what anyone says, I’m my own worst critic.
Well, if I was talking to your parents instead, what might they say was their proudest moment?
At the Toronto Film Festival for the Silver Linings Playbook premiere. I couldn’t sit with them because I had to sit with the cast. I went out first [afterwards] and then I saw them and my Dad had tears in his eyes. I’ve never seen my Dad with tears in his eyes, ever. My first thought was that someone hurt him or something! ‘What’s happened to my Dad?’ My mom was crying too but she always cries. They were really proud. That was probably the one moment I allowed myself to feel good and proud. ‘Okay, Mommy and Daddy are happy. They’re proud of me. This is awesome.’
You said you’re pleased with some of your personal decisions. Do you care to share a triumphant moment?
I was going to buy a place and then I realized that I’m just not old enough to own property. Everybody else was — Josh and Liam [her Hunger Games co-stars] bought a house, I was like, Okay I got to buy a house, that’s what’s supposed to happen. And then I finally was like ‘You know what? I’m going to rent until I’m old enough to buy a house.’ That was a huge weight off my shoulders.
Before the Hunger Games came out you told me you knew your life would be forever altered and that it was rare to meet a famous person who wasn’t jaded? After this year of massive attention, do you feel jaded yourself?
I’m different. It’s exciting for about five minutes — like walking through a restaurant and hearing people say your name to each other. After a while it starts to get creepy and scary and you feel cynical and now I do this thing where I’ve got this tunnel vision where I only see people that I recognize. I don’t look at strangers because I know if I look I’m going to make eye contact with people. I always imagined I would stay the exact same and I would be just as happy. And I’m not. It’s not that I’m ungrateful at all. Or unhappy. It’s just that people are different and it creeps me out so I only want to be around the people who still treat me the same. I don’t go home and brush my teeth and think I’m brushing my teeth like a famous person! You don’t notice it at all until you talk to a stranger and you realize they’re treating you differently and looking at you differently.
And yet you seem to have avoided the ugly tabloid attention faced by other young stars.
I’m just really boring. [Laughs] They’ve tried. There’ve been stories that are so not true and quotes that have been taken completely out of context. Like I’m dating John Mayer, when I’ve met him once. But the truth is I’m always in my house at five and sitting on my couch and going to bed at nine.
That sounds like lots of time for pop culture! Who and what entertained you this year?
What don’t I love about Game of Thrones? I was shooting in Prague so I didn’t have TV and I just got box sets of DVDs. I just watched Game of Thrones straight. I was obsessed, like I haven’t been since my Harry Potter days. Let’s see, my favorite movie was probably Ted. It is so, so funny. Any my favorite performance? Any time I see John Hawkes. He was so good in The Sessions. He always does that to me.

Katniss Fever! Yet Another EW Cover!

Last weekend the first film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling book series about dystopian teenage blood-sport massacred the competition at the box office, raking in an astronomical $152.5 million and taking its place as the third biggest opening weekend of all time. Jennifer Lawrence’s headstrong heroine Katniss Everdeen shot her way into the hearts and wallets of moviegoers the world over, as well as onto our newsstand cover. 

Even the folks who were banking on The Hunger Games being a success were shocked by how many fans and not-yet-fans alike crammed into multiplex seats to watch Katniss fight for her life. “This has exploded beyond anything we could have imagined,” says director Gary Ross. “There are days where it feels like we’re in the middle of some national media event that has nothing to do with entertainment. We keep looking around trying to figure out how this could have actually happened.” Lionsgate is aiming to release the sequel, Catching Fire, around Thanksgiving 2013, but everyone will be returning to work much sooner. “It’s fantastic to finally have the movie out in the world and to see all of these people who love it,” says producer Nina Jacobson, who first picked up the rights to Collins’ novel back in 2009, “but at the end of the day we’ll roll up our sleeves and it’s on to the next one.”

EW Hunger Games Issue On Stands Friday, March 2nd!

“Is it violent?” says director Gary Ross of his PG-13 film. “Yes. Do we back off from what it is? No, we don’t.”

The March 23 release of The Hunger Games is nearly upon us. While we can’t make the clock turn any faster, we can offer fans of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling dystopian trilogy (and newcomers, too) a deep, behind-the-scenes look into the making of the film, from conception to casting, filming to marketing.

Perhaps no bit of casting news was met with greater surprise than Lenny Kravitz taking on the role of Cinna, hero Katniss Everdeen’s deeply cool and compassionate stylist. Kravitz was working on his album, living out of a trailer in the Bahamas and oblivious to the Hunger Games phenomenon, when Ross first approached him to offer him the part. The director had been moved by the musician’s gentle grace in Precious and was further intrigued by the fact that Kravitz already felt a nurturing bond with star Jennifer Lawrence, who had become close friends with his daughter Zoe during the filming of X-Men: First Class. “I love that girl,” says Kravitz. “The minute I met her she became a part of the family.”

It took one sleepless night of reading a downloaded version of The Hunger Games in his trailer for Kravitz to commit. But Woody Harrelson, who initially turned down the role of Katniss and Peeta’s sodden wreck of a mentor Haymitch, was a harder sell. “Listen, I’m nuts,” he explains. “It was just a stupid thing where I hadn’t read the books yet. I didn’t see that there was enough for me to do in the script. But then Gary called me back and said ‘You got to do this, I don’t have a second choice for the role.’ And of course flattery always gets the best of me so I read the books and really saw the depths of this guy. Holy s—, I would have been bummed to miss this.”
