CASTING ALERT: JENA MALONE OFFICIALLY CAST AS JOHANNA MASON!
OFFICIAL CASTING NEWS, YAY!!
Press Release:
JENA MALONE CAST AS JOHANNA MASON IN LIONSGATE’S THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE
Santa
Monica, CA, July 23, 2012- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER
GAMES:CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Jena Malone has been
cast in the role of Johanna Mason in the much anticipated film
adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire.
Johanna Mason is a female victor from a past Games still in her early
twenties, and is one of the youngest, but also one of the most
psychologically scarred Quarter Quell participants.
Malone recently starred opposite Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton in the History Channel's Emmy® nominated mini-series Hatfields & McCoys. The
mini-series broke cable records and is the new most-watched
entertainment telecast of all time on cable. Her additional credits
include Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, Oren Moverman's The Messenger, and Sean Penn's Into the Wild. She will soon begin production on Lonely Hunter.
THE
HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned
home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow
tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and
leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of
the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is
simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.
THE
HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and
produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon
Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy
that has over 50 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.
Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE on November 22, 2013.

CASTING FIRE: Jena Malone Offered Johanna Mason!!
Is this fate, or what? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jena Malone has been offered the role of Johanna Mason, and what do you know they share the same initials!
Source: THRWhile many in Hollywood are cutting out early for the holidays, it’s reaping day for Jena Malone.
Malone has the offer and is in early negotiations for the part, according to sources. The move nixes premature reports that pegged newbie actress-model Zoe Aggeliki as the frontrunner to play the ax-wielding former Hunger Games winner from District 7, who aligns with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) in their return to the arena for an all-stars death match. The Sucker Punch actress is in talks to play snide tribute Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, a key role that will be reprised in the trilogy’s third installment, Mockingjay.
We are super excited about her being cast, I mean have you SEEN her IMDB page? Not only is she close to Johanna's age, but she has acting credits up the wazoo. Let's hope she accepts!

Johanna Rumors Abound!!
What's new in the rumor mill? Sources say Mia Wasikowska & Zoe Aggeliki may be in the running to play the spunky Johanna Mason. Here's what The Playlist had to say:
Interesting bit of news, I am glad to see that Lawrence is playing around with both a big name actress and an unknown. Let's see how this plays out, shall we?

Sources close to the project tell The Playlist that Mia Wasikowska and model/actress Zoe Aggeliki are in the mix for Johanna Mason. The character becomes a strong ally with Katniss and Peeta during the 75th Hunger Games, but has a testy relationship with Katniss who likens her to an older sister who hates you. She's a fierce competitor who has no family and friends left in District 7 where she hails, with her weapon of choice being an axe. Director Francis Lawrence is keen on finding the right actress to fit the part, and is looking at both big names and lesser known talents.
Both actresses have been in discussions for the part, and we hear that Aggeliki could sign in the coming days, but nothing is certain just yet. Aggeliki may not be a familiar face at the moment, but she'll be seen next summer in "R.I.P.D." and also landed a role in "Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters" as Silena Beauregard. Whoever does snag the role will not only appear in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" but in "Mockingjay" as well, as Johanna figures strongly in that story as well. Production on 'Catching Fire' begins later this year, and the film will hit theaters on November 22, 2013.

Kristen Bell Discusses Her Hunger Games Obsession and Themed Birthday Party
In a recent interview with Kristen Bell, her Hunger Games fangirl status came up, and she talks about her HG-themed birthday party.
Now, "The Hunger Games." I know you're a big fan.
It's all I think about.
Anything new in your campaign to be Johanna? Is that still happening?
I mean from my campaign desk here on my full-size bed in a back bedroom in my family's house in Oregon, there are no new developments [Laughs] -- other than the fact that I am trying to stay on top of it and not age too rapidly so that I can still be cast.
For Halloween, were you Katniss?
No, but my 30th birthday I themed after "The Hunger Games" and I put District numbers up around. I put District 4 for water over the pool. I put District 2 for electronics over the stereo and iPod. I had a blow-up castle bouncy house on the front lawn and I put The Capitol over the bouncy house. And over my front door, I put District 12. All my friends dressed as the characters and I dressed as Katniss. I was head-to-toe in spandex with a fire cape and carried a bow and arrow.
That sounds pretty damn epic.
Oh yeah, it was pretty much major. I had friends that went all out. I have friends that like do it. They do not mess around. I had friends who came as Cato and Clove and were dressed in weird sewn-together fabric leaves and army colors. They had the football black under their eyes and they had taken all the knives in their house, even the butcher knives, and wrapped them in duct tape so they wouldn't be too sharp and flung them over their body like sort of ammo lines. They had all these knives taped to them -- it was amazing. I had a couple Effie Trinkets. It was pretty exceptional. People dressed up like tracker jackers. They were like bumble bees, but with huge horns.Source
It's all we think about too, Kristen. And man we'd love to have been at that party!
From where we stand, we'd be ecstatic if she had the chance to play Johanna. We're all for celebrities who are fans of the books getting roles, and she has a history of playing sarcastic, kick-ass ladies (Veronica Mars, Fanboys, Heroes, and now House of Lies).
And before anyone gets all uppity about it, there is NO evidence in the books that Johanna Mason is a POC. She may have brown hair, but we've all learned that hair dye is a thing that exists, right?
