Chapter 22

***SPOILER ALERT***

AKA the chapter which we don't like to speak of. I don't know what evil I did to end up writing about this chapter, but here I am. The first time I read it I didn't even realize what happened until it was too late and I had to go back and experience the horror that is Finnick's death.

I've been terrified by the mutts since the first book, these ones by far freaked me out the worst. The whole Star Squad is startled by the echoing of the mutts hissing "Katniss" and even more discouraged by Peeta joining in. They're flee for their lives through the tunnels when Katniss is overwhelmed by the smell the mutts are giving off.
One of my favorite things about the horror of President Snow is his collection of roses. The films have even added to this terror by constantly assaulting the viewer with images of the rose gardens and making sure that we associate roses with Snow. I hope that they could bring this scent association to life even though we won't (thankfully!) be subjected to it during the film. Unless some jerk decides to bring some roses in the theater.

The mutts that follow Katniss and crew are reptilian and reeking of roses. The mutts surround them and Katniss and friends have no way out except to go to street level. Two of the Star Squad stay back to cover them, thus sacrificing themselves for Katniss' safety. As they climb to safety, the mutts catch Finnick and start to tear at him. Katniss uses her Holo for one last time as she says the passcode to make it explode and offers Finnick a quick death.

I am excited and anxious to see this scene play out. I hope that like with most of the deaths in the movies, we will not get a glorified show, but instead a fast paced realistic death. On the other hand I really want them to say "Screw Canon!" and let Finnick live out the rest of his days with Annie and now I'm starting to cry... WHY SUZANNE, WHY???

At the end, they are down to just five. Pollux, Cressida, Gale, Peeta and Katniss. They climb into someone's house right as the owner opens the door to investigate the noise. The owner is about to cry for help when Katniss guns her down. I WANT THIS SCENE TO HAPPEN SO BADLY. I think it's by far one of the most interesting scenes, that even though that person is just a random citizen, Katniss does not hesitate to be the soldier that she has become and keep her friends safe. I feel like this is a far cry from the Katniss of the first book, who would have never killed anyone in cold blood like this.

And now I'm going to cry over Finnick some more and pretend it never happened.

Sam Claflin talks to Elle about becoming Finnick Odair

Elle magazine spoke with Sam Claflin about his role as Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games. It's a pretty great interview:

ELLE: Hello, Sam! Let’s get to it. You’ve said in previous interviews that when you went in for your first Catching Fire audition, you didn’t know what the role was for. How could that be? 

Sam Claflin: I was sent over a script and there was no title to what I was reading. It was just two scenes with a character called “Finnick” and a mini-character breakdown. I started reading the scene and saw the name Katniss, and I’d just recently seen The Hunger Games, so I thought, “OK, is this a connection?” But I didn’t know it was a trilogy. I just thought it was a one-time film. So I typed Finnick Odair” into Google an all these book and fan pages came up and I was kind of like, “whoa.” So, I just went through all of it and did as much research as I could the night before.

ELLE: I was surprised to learn that you read so much of the fan reaction to your casting, because it wasn’t the most positive at first… 

SC: Yeah, I think everyone was very shocked. Which I understand because it’s such an important role in the franchise. 

ELLE: It just seems like a lot of actors would try to avoid that and instead concentrate on what they can bring to the role. Do you feel it helped you to know what the fans thought? 

SC: It helped push me forward and motivate me to work harder. I was reading so many stories about people being unhappy that I got the role—and don’t get me wrong, I don’t sit here Googling myself 24/7—but I think part of me was eager to learn what I needed to do in order to become the Finnick the fans needed me to be. The negative comments made that easier to know what their expectations of me were.

It's funny to think that Sam Claflin didn't realize at first that the role of Finnick was such a big deal and was a part of The Hunger Games. Also it's great to know that he really cares about the fans' opinions, even the negative ones, so much that he took them into account in how he portrayed Finnick.

Sam Claflin Interview and VIDEO from Teen Vogue

Ah, it's the details that really get us when watching an adapted film. While being interviewed by Teen Vogue, Sam Claflin mentions that for most of the arena scenes Finnick is carrying Mags (Lynn Cohen) on his back. There's been a drought of Catching Fire news lately and Hunger Games fans will latch on to any bit of information at this point!

TV: Your training sounds intense!
SC: From the moment I set foot in Atlanta, they had me at the gym, working out twice a day. And then stunt training, it's nonstop. To be fair, I spend a lot of the film carrying an old lady on my back, as Finnick carries Mags for the majority of the arena scenes. I feel like every day of filming is a workout, running around Hawaii with little old Lynn Cohen on my back. As for my diet, I think I've eaten more chickens than there are in the world. [Laughs] I would eat chicken and asparagus for lunch and dinner, and for breakfast I'd have an omelet and oatmeal. And I had that every day for four months. I've talked to my friends and said, "Oh my God, I'm so depressed, I just want a burger." And they're like, "You don't know how lucky you are to be doing what you are doing."

#FinnickWatch2012: Has Garret Auditioned for Finnick?

POSSIBLY! Today's Finnick rumor is brought to you by once again, laineygossip.com who claims:

I’m told that Hedlund auditioned for the part of Finnick in Catching Fire for director Francis Lawrence about 10 days ago. It went very well. No final decisions yet but interest in Armie Hammer seems to have waned since Hammer wasn’t as enthusiastic about it as Lawrence was about him. Am told they’re still seeing people. But their priority right now isn’t so much casting as it is about getting the script in better shape.

Very interesting to hear, as ten days ago would put all this "frontrunner" hubbub around the exact same time as Garret allegedly auditioned. Remember folks, this is all heresay. Nothing will be confirmed until the Finnick casting is announced. 

#FinnickWatch2012 UPDATE: Is it Armie?

Hold on to your knickers, girls and boys, the rumor mill has just spit out a doozy.

E! News reported the other day that Taylor Kitsch, Garrett Hedlund, and Armie Hammer were on the short list to play Finnick in Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games. Multiple sources tell me that Armie Hammer is far and away the first choice of director Francis Lawrence. That if it were up to him and “if he could start tomorrow with his dream cast, Armie would be Finnick”. At press time, nothing is final. And besides, a lot of people think this might not be the best career move for Hammer anyway. I spoke with a few talent agents who said they’d hesitate before recommending it because it ties him up for two pictures and ‘the question is whether or not he still needs to “break out”. It depends on how you see Armie’s career’.

 While it is exciting that he may be Lawrence's first choice, there are many factors at work that need to be considered on Armie's side that still remains to be seen. Don't get too excited, Armie fans! This is still just a rumor and nothing is official until Lionsgate confirms.

#FinnickWatch2012: It's not Taylor Kitsch

#FinnickWatch2012 UPDATE!! Apparently Taylor Kitsch will not be in the running for the role of Finnick in Catching Fire:

"Not going to happen," the 31-year-old actor wrote in an email on Wednesday. Kitsch, who is coming off the poor box office performance of the big-budget films "John Carter" and "Battleship," would seem to have fit the bill for the athletic, good-looking character.
As for "The Lone Ranger" star Hammer and "TRON: Legacy" lead Hedlund, the studio behind the franchise, Lionsgate, said it would not confirm, deny or comment on any casting in progress.
