Confirmed: Catching Fire Filmed in NJ Last Week!

Sometime last week there were some rumblings, rumors, and speculation that Catching Fire was filming in New Jersey. On last night's HG Fireside Chat we speculated it may just be for establishing shots, but today it has been confirmed by Steven Gorelick that Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth were there shooting in NJ's cold weather (remember, CF mostly takes place during winter).

The film crews in Ringwood last week were, in fact, there shooting “The Hunger Games” sequel, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” — and Katniss herself was in town.
“They filmed scenes for the beginning of the movie in Ramapo State Forest,” said Steven Gorelick, executive director of the New Jersey Motion Picture & Television Commission, who was on set during Friday’s filming.
The movie’s stars Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth were there, according to Gorelick.

The 22-year-old Lawrence, who said Sunday at the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) Awards that she is battling walking pneumonia, couldn’t have enjoyed the frigid temperatures but it made for good moviemaking.
“The weather worked perfectly for them,” said Gorelick. “The water froze and there was a little snow and they got some very good footage.”

CATCHING FIRE WINS MTV MOVIE BRAWL!

WE WON! AT LAST! Check out what MTV had to say as well as Sam Claflin:

The story of MTV Movie Brawl 2013 turned out to be one of redemption.
After "The Hunger Games" lost a knock-down, drag-out fight at the hands of Robert Pattinson fans and the indie surprise "Cosmopolis," "Catching Fire" has risen from the ashes — and 10 million votes — to claim this year's title as the most anticipated movie of 2013. The victory, however, does mean a disappointing end for "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," the hotly anticipated YA adaptation and the rookie star of the bracket.

Sam Claflin, one of the newest cast members to join the series, shared his excitement about the Movie Brawl victory exclusively to MTV News. "I'm so happy and proud to say I'm a part of 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' " he said. "Just want to say a big thank you to all the fans worldwide for voting. I'm thrilled to know they are just as excited as I am for the next chapter."

This year's journey to victory was no cake walk for Katniss Everdeen and the rest of the tributes. Though the movie wiped the floor with first-round opponent, "After Earth," it faced a fierce battle against "The Host," ultimately besting Stephenie Meyer's sci-fi flick by taking 54-percent of the total votes. From there, "Catching Fire" moved on to the most heated matchup of the Brawl, this one against another YA franchise player, "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters." After millions of votes, the surprise powerhouse only trailed "Catching Fire" by less than 4,000 when the semifinals polls closed, ending a hard-fought battle and dashing the dreams of Lermaniacs everywhere. It seemed that the Jennifer Lawrence-led follow-up would have to fight for every victory until the end.

Once the second consecutive trip to the finals was confirmed for "The Hunger Games" franchise, that's when the real battle began. In a tournament that notched 10 million votes, the results pointed to a clear, 100,000-vote win for "Catching Fire" over "The Mortal Instruments." The strong showing from the Shadowhunters proved that the YA adaptation is a force to be reckoned with.
To the cast and fans of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," we salute you! Congratulations on a well-deserved win in the MTV Movie Brawl 2013.

The Francis Lawrence Interview We've Been Waiting For!

Thank you MTV news, more importantly to the ever awesome Josh Horowitz for bringing two great interviews with Francis Lawrence to the fans. Ever since we found out Francis Lawrence would be helming the rest of the films, we've needed to know at least a little information on how he is handling Catching Fire.

On taking over for Gary Ross
"I liked what Gary did a lot, but I have a different style than he does," Lawrence explained. "So it was very easy for me to come in the room and sit down with the people involved in the movie and sort of say, 'Here's what I like about what Gary did that I would latch on to and hold onto and embrace, and here's the way I would do it differently.' The trickier thing, honestly for me, was sort of stepping into a world, and there's crew members that were on the first movie, obviously an entire cast, all the people that are returning that I inherited. I was nervous about what they were going to feel... I think everybody in general was really gracious and worked really hard and ended up being really fun to work with. I think there were a couple of people that were really bummed that Gary wasn't doing it, and it had less to do with the choice of me coming on than just Gary not doing it. They signed on with Gary; they're friends with Gary; they like Gary. And I think there was definitely some sadness there."
Although we love continuity, it is nice to see a different change of pace for Catching Fire given the natural event of extreme change in the story, not to mention losing the highly debated "shaky cam".

Choosing Finnick
"[Claflin] is very athletic, which is great. He's in great shape. He's very charismatic," Lawrence said. "But I was also looking in the long term. There's kind of a rouge-like quality to him in this book. And long term, he's actually an emotional character and a very loyal character and a character who's in love; a character who experienced quite a lot of sadness. And he was really able to tap into that, as well as being really charming and sexy and handsome as hell."
 Bringing out the real Haymitch
Another item on Lawrence's to-do list was to sit down with actor Woody Harrelson to further refine his approach to alcoholic District 12 mentor Haymitch Abernathy. Harrelson had previously told MTV News that he had pushed for more drunkenness than Ross would allow—something which, along with Haymitch's post-traumatic stress disorder, the director and actor took a closer look at.

"One of the things that we wanted to dive into a little more... is the whole idea of PTSD, and one of the big things for [author] Suzanne[Collins] is just sort of the idea of the consequences of war as kind of one of the backbone theme of the entire series," Lawrence said. "One of the things I really like about this book is you start to see kind of why Haymitch is the way he is, why people are the way they are, so he and I did a fair amount of work in terms of that, in terms of understanding PTSD and how to work with somebody with post-traumatic stress. Also we started messing around a lot with some real humanity in Haymitch because he can be quite cynical and sarcastic at times. But I think there's a more human side to him in this one as well.
Seems to me that Francis Lawrence has a great handle on the character of Haymitch and his role in Catching Fire. PTSD is a big theme in the books, we're glad to see it being focused on.

The Arena
"The arena stuff is pretty tricky... just because the sort of center of the arena where the cornucopia exists and the water and the spokes. The circular beach with the jungle around it doesn't exist, so we have to sort of piece it all together," he explained. "And you know even though shooting in Hawaii sounds like a lot of fun, it's pretty tricky when you're in the beach and waves and tides. Our set got washed away one day by the tide, and then... shooting in the jungle where there's bugs and mud and rain. The days are short, so you don't have much time, and you're starting to lug around 100-pound IMAX cameras."
Catching Fire as a Faithful Adaptation
"No, not really [when asked if there are major changes], I would say that it’s a really faithful adaptation. You know, whenever you're adapting something that’s a 12- or 14-hour read down to something that has to be around two hours, there’s going to be some cuts. We definitely made some cuts. I don’t want to go into that, but we did it with Suzanne, and I would say that it’s very, very faithful. We tried to get as much as we could in there."
Scenes Francis is Proud Of
"It's interesting because there’s a very small blur—I want to say it's a paragraph long in the book—but the moment in the arena when the gamemaker starts to spin the cornucopia, and I’m very proud of that. We designed a very cool sequence and created a spinning island, and that’s going to be very, very cool. So that’s kind of fun and very unique. I’ve never seen anything like it. It's cool.
"You know one of the very first things we shot that I like quite a lot is, there is sort of a goodbye before she goes into the arena with Liam that I like a lot. And it was actually—we shot it because we needed summer foliage and summer flowers and things like that. We actually shot it while we were in prep. Very first thing we sort of went out into the meadow, out in the mountains in north Georgia and shot this sequence over three or four hours or so, and I really like it. I think it’s really nice. Jennifer and Liam are really good in it. It’s very nice."
Really excited that the spinning of the Cornucopia hasn't gone by the wayside. However, I'm little sad that Katniss doesn't just get shoved into the train without goodbyes (which is how it is in the book, showing how punishing the Capitol is toward Katniss), but then again maybe it's for the sake of more Gale scenes.

Mockingjay
"Nina, John, Suzanne and I have gone through the book and created the beat sheets for it. And started going through all that and at least marking our initial ideas of what the moments would be and how it all breaks down. And Danny Strong, who’s writing the first one, is working now. So yeah, we’ve actually done a fair amount of work. We're starting to think about where we could shoot it and all of that."
A little concerned that Francis mentions Danny Strong writing "the first one". Seems to me it would be much better to have the same writer for both parts? I'm going to stay hopeful and say they are focusing on the first one and going from there. But seriously, two writers for part 1 and 2 is just silly.

These interviews have given fans a lot of insight and evidence for speculation as for how Catching Fire will be faithfully adapted. Thanks to Josh Horowitz for his amazing interview questions, they are always the questions fans are burning to be answered!

Why is Catching Fire so far away?!

UPDATED: Designer Iris van Herpen NOT Designing Mockingjay Dress?

THR is reporting on a rumor that Iris van Herpen may be designing the famous Mockingjay dress for Catching Fire. Turns out she is designing ONE dress for the film, but it is unknown which one.

Could van Herpen be the designer behind the dress that bursts into fire? An inside source on the movie says van Herpen is indeed working on one costume for the film, but didn't confirm which one. After seeing her dresses made to look like splashes of water, the fiery dress does sound right up her alley.
Belgian-born Herpen, who interned with Alexander McQueen and just showed her Spring 2013 couture line in Paris on Jan. 21, is fascinated by the elements: water, air or smoke. To give you an idea of her inspirations, her past collections have been named Chemical Crows, Crystalization, Hybrid Holism, Radiation Invasion, Escapism Couture, Synesthesia and Mummification.

Interesting choice! I would have to agree that if they are bringing in a fashion designer to design a dress, it's probably the Mockingjay Dress. This brings to mind another thought, it's nice to see that they care so much about the costumes to even bring in a designer specifically for this. Things are looking good, kids.

Source: THR

*UPDATE* Turns out, Iris van Herpen is apparently *NOT* designing a dress for Catching Fire. According to Fashionista, she's not involved with the franchise at all. Confusing? Yes. I'm still not convinced, but I suppose it will be a while before we find out for sure what happened here.

5 Things You Should Know About The Hunger Games Costume Tour

We've got quite a year ahead of us, Hunger Games fans! Catching Fire buzz has just now begun, (not to mention award season) and we are getting crazy excited for it all. But there is one event that is happening all throughout this next year and we DO NOT want you to miss it. The Hunger Games costumes are going on a nationwide tour, ending in an auction at New York Comic Con. Last Saturday we saw a sneak preview of the costumes at The Hollywood Show, which really got us excited for this tour.

So what's new this time around? We got an even bigger sneak peek at what's to come in this costume tour, so here are our FIVE things you should know about Blacksparrow Auction's Hunger Games Costume Tour:

Katniss' final interview dress!
1. Blacksparrow Auctions has ALL the costumes from the first film. Every tour stop will have about 10-20 costumes, but know that they are choosing from literally EVERYTHING.

2. The AMAZING detail. Folks, there are things about these costumes that you can't even hope to notice on film. They are detailed in ways that are indeed true to the books, and some even in ways you did not expect.

3. I'm sure you are thinking that you probably aren't going to be able to own a piece of the first Hunger Games film because dude, you're not a millionaire. WRONG! This auction will have something for everyone. They are not auctioning off just a few outfits, but the whole shebang. Odds are (see what I did there?) you can probably get your hands on something for a decent price.

4. More stops are likely to be announced in the future! Don't give up hope if you don't live near any of the cities already signed up for the costume tour.

5. This is a one time opportunity! These costumes are going for auction and they'll likely never be seen again. To be in the presence of these finely crafted costumes is unreal. If you have the chance to see this, we highly recommend you take it.

NOTE: To get up-to-date news on the costume tour, follow Blacksparrow Auctions on Facebook!

Tour dates as of now:

Seattle, WA - Emerald City Comic Con - March 1-3

Chicago, IL - C2E2 - April 26-28

New York - New York Comic Con - October 10-13

Jennifer Lawrence Wins Golden Globe!!

Photo: wesrias

The biggest news from last night's Golden Globes (at least for Hunger Games fans) was that Jennifer Lawrence scored Best Actress!! Her acceptance speech was very grateful towards her family and cast members, but not without total "J-Law" style quoting First Wives Club and implying that Harvey Weinstein murdered people to get Jennifer that win. Hands down the best acceptance speech of the night!

Here's the video of her acceptance speech:

Here is what she had to say in the press room following her win:

On her Golden Globe feelings: "So confused and so happy. Really excited."
What made her connect with the character: "Probably my love for the character, my love for David [O. Russell], and his amazing script."
Is there a song that sets you off like "My Cherie Amour" in the film? "'Come On Baby Light My Fire.' I was losing at tennis and throwing a total tantrum, so every time I hear that song I want to throw a tennis racket."
On feelings about working with Bradley Cooper and the Oscar nod: "I feel very good about both those things. Bradley is an amazing actor, an amazing actor to work with and an incredible person. I feel quite good about the Oscar nod. It feels quite wonderful."
On feelings toward the nickname J Law: "That's been going on for years. My, like, 7th grade teacher started saying J Law, so to hear Will Ferrell say that is incredible. I'll be getting lots of texts about that!"
On thinking about the Oscars: "That gives me a lot of anxiety, so no. I do think about them. I've been thinking about everyone in the cast. Me and the Oscars together gives me lots of anxiety."
On the dress: "The dress is Dior Haute Couture. I had about 40 people put me into it — no, three. I've never been good at walking in heels."
On taking the part: "Well, I was wrong for the part. I was way too young, but I guess we turned that around. We fixed it in postproduction."

EW: Three Missing Characters

Who's missing from the Catching Fire film? EW tells us!

Fans of Suzanne Collins’s  words, you can rest easy. The adaptation of the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire will be “very, very true to book,” promises new director Francis Lawrence.
This week’s cover story  describes the whirlwind few weeks that followed once director Gary Ross stepped away from the helm in April. “We were five months from when we needed to start shooting and we had no script and no director,” says producer Nina Jacobson. Once Lawrence came aboard, Jacobson put together her new director with series mastermind Collins to outline the script. Their main task, says Lawrence, was figuring out a way to best distill the novel’s dense first third, during which our hero Katniss Everdeen, home from her victory tour but tormented by the ghosts of war, struggles internally with her next move.
Lawrence says he and Collins were always in agreement about what from the book needed to be distilled, though he was coy about cuts. When asked, for instance, whether we should expect to see Bonnie and Twill — the District 8 runaways Katniss stumbles upon in the woods who first alert her to both the rebellion she inadvertently sparked and the existence of District 13 — he at first demurred. “You’ve got to wait and see,” he urged. But when it was pointed out that there is in fact no Bonnie and Twill listed on the movie’s IMDB page, he gave it up. “Ah, right,” he said with a laugh. On how the movie will now introduce District 13, Lawrence would only say that “it was fun figuring out new ways around things and new ways of doing things.” With Bonnie and Twill gone, so too is the scene of Katniss scaling a tree and then leaping over District 12′s electrified fence. And Darius, District 12′s youngest peacekeeper who intervenes during Gale’s whipping and then sentenced to the life of an Avox, is another who didn’t make the leap from page to screen.
If the loss of Darius bums you out (and it should!), know at least that the filmmakers feel your pain. “It’s as agonizing for us to lose things from the book as it is for a fan,” says producer Nina Jacobson. “I want every single thing in there. But you know what? If you have to give up something in order to give more time to Katniss and Gale or to Effie as she starts to feel a conscience, you make the sacrifices in order to serve the characters and themes that are more essential.”

Source: EW

Very sad, but not surprising as the Avox storyline was cut out in the first film,  and we suspected that Bonnie and Twill might get the boot.

Entertainment Weekly Scans Are HERE!

We've already got scans from the Entertainment Weekly Catching Fire Issue iPad version!

If you want to read it for yourself click "read more" below, or just read our recap right here:

NEW INFORMATION!
  • According to Jennifer Lawrence, Francis has a real passion for the book
  • Nina Jacobson says that Sam Claflin has both the swagger and soulness needed for playing Finnick Odair
  • Finnick's "strategic netting" chariot outfit from book makes it to the screen
  • Simon Beaufoy was set to write Catching Fire, but left after Gary Ross exited the project. With no script, Francis Lawrence and Suzanne Collins spent three days in a room to form the film outline. Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) streamlined the script.
  • Francis Lawrence wanted bigger, better costumes and VFX. He hired Girl With The Dragon Tattoo costume designer Trish Summerville, and wanted new cinematography by hiring Janek Sirrs (The Avengers) as VFX supervisor.

We just want to give a BIG CONGRATS for Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman for being nominated for the 2013 Oscars!! They got nominated for their roles in Silver Linings Playbook and The Master.

EW Reveals Catching Fire Cover!

What do you guys think? Check out the story below:

The revolution has been sparked. In this week’s cover story, EW traveled to Waikiki, Hawaii where cast and crew were in the final days of production on the eagerly anticipated Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire (in theaters Nov. 21). Just as the revolution that could embolden the people of Panem rests on young Katniss Everdeen’s shoulders, the success of the franchise depends largely upon Jennifer Lawrence. After spending the day outrunning death in a nearby jungle, the 22-year-old actress ordered herself a Budweiser and kicked back in the Trump balcony lounge to discuss the sequel, her life now as a blockbuster star, and her willful inability to behave like the nice sound-bite machine Hollywood might expect her to be. “It’s almost like I subconsciously don’t want to work anymore so I’m trying to ruin my career,” she says with a laugh at one point, before leaning in close to the reporter’s tape recorder. “I’m pregnant!” she joked.
From her first meeting with new director Francis Lawrence (“I spit egg inside his mouth when I was talking. Into his mouth”) to the raucous party she hosted for the Catching Fire cast and crew (“When Sam walked in I was chasing Woody and we’d flipped over my couch and Woody had a sock all the way down my throat…”), Lawrence was frank and funny and self-aware. “I’m so aware of all the b.s. that surrounds Hollywood,” she says, “and how everyone gets on this high horse and thinks that they’re curing cancer and it makes me so uncomfortable every time I see it. So I go in the exact opposite direction and end up saying something like ‘I’m pregnant!’ when I’m in two franchises.”

Then in an exclusive conversation, director Francis Lawrence described his vision for the sequel, his immediate three-day pow-wow with series writer Suzanne Collins to ready a script, and how one of his inherited cast members had a particularly hard time adjusting to the loss of Hunger Games director Gary Ross. (Woody Harrelson, who plays Katniss and Peeta’s wry and PTSD-ruined wreck of a mentor Haymitch.)
EW also sat down with Sam Claflin, the green-eyed, dimpled Brit who won the role of District 4′s charming and enigmatic golden boy Finnick Odair, for his first Hunger Games interview. He described filming the infamous sugar cube scene, in which Finnick teases Katniss while wearing nothing beyond some strategically placed netting, as “the scariest moment of my life. I’m on Twitter and so many people have been like ‘Don’t mess this up, or we will kill you.’”

Henry Mill Village Closed to the Public

Well, it finally happened. Reports of Henry Mill Village vandalism over the past year has at last forced the owner to close the District 12 set for public viewing. To which, I say GOOD FOR YOU Wade Shepherd!

"Hunger Games” movie buffs and other sightseers will no longer be allowed on a property that served as the home of the movie’s heroine.
Wade Shepherd said people will no longer be allowed on the property of Henry River Mill Village without his written consent.

Shepherd made the decision after dealing with brazen vandalism.
“Because of theft and destroying things, I don’t want anybody else on the village,” he said.
Rather than just sightseeing from the safe distance of the sidewalks of the property, folks have been taking everything from wood boards from the old store to window frames from homes.
You know people, things that are out there for the public to view ARE NOT for you to jack stuff whenever you please. Not only are you stealing, but you are stealing the hopes and dreams of Hunger Games fans all over the world who had not yet gotten a chance to admire the District 12 set. Oh, and if this doesn't make you mad, there's this gem:

Shepherd said he found six girls from Raleigh each taking a window frame from houses and putting them in their cars. He told them to put the window frames back and said they initially refused. Only after he threatened to call police did the girls put the window frames back, he said.

It doesn’t stop there, however. Shepherd said people are even crawling under the houses now to take mementos. The old mill village houses aren’t safe, Shepherd said. “They’re everywhere they’re not supposed to be,” Shepherd said. “They’re just pilfering through everything.”

CONGRATULATIONS to each and every one of you who were responsible for the ultimate closure of the District 12 set. You have officially ruined things for the entire class, and you are the most selfish fans I have ever had the misfortune to even hear about. I'm all for this set closing to the public, because if enough people are not respecting the movie set that we hold so dear, then it rightfully should be closed.

The Hunger Games Advenutures debuts District 3!

Hey guys! Hope you guys had a great holiday and new year, we're glad to be posting some news finally. The Hunger Games Adventures has revealed the official location of District 3, interestingly enough just north of District 12. I think I have always thought of District 3 in the vicinity of 2, but I guess anywhere is suitable to put a bunch of factories in North America.

To answer the burning question of whether this is Suzanne approved, we're going to give you an ambiguous yeeeeeessss??? We know Suzanne was consulted for the creation of THGA, so it is possible Suzanne approved the "official" map.
