The Day The Fansites Met on ABC Nightline!!

It will live in infamy: The day the fansites met. It was a glorious day, and one I will not soon forget. Sunday March 11th, 2012. The fansites explored the Hob campground, interviewed campers, took photos with cast, and even met some too! But what happened afterwards was quite interesting indeed. We had a "barbecue" at one of the coolest places, the #CapitolShore. Interestingly enough, Nightline swung by the party! Fast forward to tonight, when Nightline showed a bit on The Hunger Games. It talks about the growing fandom, the fansite "barbecue", and a bit on Emily Ansara Baines, the author of The Unofficial Hunger Games cookbook.

You can watch the whole Nightline episode HERE at the ABCNews website. Skip to the second section of the video.

Check out some screencaps from the episode!

Promoting The Hunger Games at the Comikaze Expo!

By Courtney and Tiffany

CONVENTIONS, WEEEEE!!!

If you've ever been to one and happen to be a huge nerd, you know that conventions are like Christmas morning. Exciting panels, cool stuff to buy, free stuff, and opportunities abound to run up to a stranger dressed as one of your favorite characters to chat or take a picture with them. *Sigh.* It's the best.

Who did we see?!

Me (Courtney) and MARIO!
With our tribute powers combined we saw the cast of All That, Stan Lee, Elvira, Ernest Borgnine, and the best of all, Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill. We also saw a fantastic amount of quality cosplayers.  People really brought their A-Game! We saw Cosplayers from all walks of life...except no one from The Hunger Games. Then again, there could have been, we just didn't see them. But rest assured that next year, especially after the release of the movie, we will see more Hunger Games cosplayers.

The Panels

"The All That cast reunion was awesome. The cast members each did a few of their favorite and more well known characters (Kel Mitchell did Ed from Good Burger, Katrina Johnson did Ross Perot, for example), and they sang the All That theme song with everyone. They seemed to have genuinely enjoyed their time on the show, and they had an extraordinary amount of freedom for the age that they were when it came to being able to do their own characters.
We ended up attending the Womanthology panel without knowing anything about it. It's a graphic novel anthology created by women and the proceeds go to charity. Many of the stories presented to us seemed interesting and a lot of the art is just beautiful. We encourage everyone to check it out and you can preorder it on Amazon.
Sunday was very much a Steampunk day for us. We went to the Steampunk Fashion and Meet The League of S.T.E.A.M. panels. I've been casually interested in the Steampunk sub-genre (Victorian era science fiction) for a few years, and since Panic! at the Disco released their The Ballad of Mona Lisa video, I've been aware of The League of S.T.E.A.M. They had helped with styling and props and were extras for the video, and also came out to a concert in Los Angeles that I attended to do demonstrations with their functioning props. A few of the League of S.T.E.A.M. members have worked (currently or in the past) for such companies as Disney Imagineering and Jim Henson, so you know that they're legit. At their booth, we watched them demonstrate their working net gun, and if you wanted, they would shock you... LITERALLY." -- Tiffany

Taking to the Floor

We handed these out!
So, my trusty Tributes (Tiffany and Denise) and I took to the show floor and promoted The Hunger Games. We sported our Mockingjay pins and "Down with the Capitol! Ask me how!" shirts armed with fancy informational cards promoting The Hunger Games books, TheCapitol.PN, Welcome to District 12, and The HG Fireside Chat. Unfortunately, not as many people approached us as I thought, but I handed out a few cards to people. I definitely learned a few things about promoting things at a convention.

"There wasn't really a Hunger Games presence within the booths. We only found one vendor selling Hunger Games items,  Foxwise. Her shop focuses on hand-stamped jewelry. She had other fandoms that I'm interested in, like Harry Potter and Doctor Who, but when I came across a bracelet that said "May the odds be ever in your favor", I was both surprised and really excited, so I bought it! I actually really love it and might be wearing it all the time, and I might just order other things from her in the future." - Tiffany

Tips on Convention Promotion

1.) Design something to give to people. Sure, they will most likely throw it away, but if it's interesting enough they will consider checking it out.
2.) Print out a butt load of them! The reason I didn't hand mine out to random people is that I procrastinated and every printer I used was low on black ink. Had I done this in advance, I would have printed out tons, and might have been able to reach more people.
3.) COSPLAY, COSPLAY. My biggest regret is that I didn't dress up as a Hunger Games character. If you have a great costume, chances are people will ask who you are, and WABAM!! segway into Hunger Games discussion and hand them what you are giving out. There's so many things happening on the floor, you need an attention getter.
4.) Catchphrase!! Sometimes shorter is better. You want to say something intriguing! One of our chosen catchphrases was "The Capitol is watching".

Tiffany's haul.
How was Comikaze?

AMAZING!! We definitely recommend that you go next year. Considering this was their first year, it went very well. Comikaze not only is aiming to be as good as Comic Con, but to offer participants things that Comic Con doesn't. An example of this is THE PRICE. Their number one priority is to ALWAYS make their convention affordable. This will blow your mind: Thanks to Goldstar, we paid a whopping FOUR DOLLARS per day. FOUR DOLLARS, PEOPLE. Regular price was $12. Still, not bad at all! Not only that, but it mingles all the smaller artists booths together. There's no hierarchy of big name booths to smaller ones, everyone's mixed together! It gave a great floor experience.

Tiff's Hunger Games bracelet!
"Comikaze as a whole seems to be the nerd community's answer to what has happened to Comic-Con. Their number one priority is keeping the Comikaze Expo as affordable as possible, and there seems to be an emphasis on those things that have been pushed aside for more mainstream interests at Comic-Con (comic books, manga, etc. being overshadowed by Hollywood hyped movies, for example). Since it was the expo's first year, things seemed a little unorganized and the panels being in "rooms" that were just curtained off areas on the showroom floor wasn't a good idea since it was quite often hard to hear (though it made for some amusing times when whole panels had to stop what they were doing while an announcement was being made over the loudspeakers). We're assuming they'll get the kinks worked out by the time next year's Expo comes around." --Tiffany

In addition to this sweet Unicorn horn, I scored original Star Wars concept prints and Triforce earrings!
We hope to see you there next year!!!

Hunger Games Poster Reaction Smackdown

How excited where you when The Hunger Games released the official character posters? Personally, I was beside myself. Maybe it was on Lionsgate's marketing schedule, or maybe they just felt too guilty for making us wait for what seems like eons for the Josh Hutcherson interview and/or the official trailer. So they threw us a bone. Whatever the case, it seems everyone pretty much had the same experience when the posters were released:

Anyway, ONWARD TO THE REACTIONS!

First of all, love the way they have been going about all their promos, one sheets, etc. for the movie. Releasing these posters only solidified that they're theme/design for their marketing is classy and simple.

Yay: Katniss' poster is the only one facing the opposite direction. Fan artists, go nuts by pairing Katniss with your choice of romantic interest! Also, she most definitely looks 16 here.

Nay: [Warning: The following Nay applies to all the posters]
The Hunger Games treatment is slightly.....awkward. The only problem really is the movie title itself, which is slowly making it's way into the character photo. I expect more out of the Hunger Games marketing team. This should have been addressed before approval.

Yay: ASDFLASKDFALSDF PEETA! Hair. Eyebrows.

Nay: No nay here!

Yay: Gale looks awesome. Not much to say here, Liam doesn't need to do much.

Nay: We all know that posters like these are airbrushed and retouched. That's cool, it's kind of the way things are when it comes to movie posters. However, Gale's is the only one that is EXTREMELY noticeable. Just a little too blur happy.

Yay: Haymitch looks pretty snazzy here! Definitely in his capitol clothes. It's kind of amusing because any outsider who stumbles upon this poster not familiar with the story has no idea what it means to be Haymitch.

Nay: Um, hair? What's going on here? I guess we will just have to see!

Yay: PERFECTION. Gold eyeliner. This man is Cinna and I cannot wait to see him play this character.

Nay: Nothing wrong here!

Yay: I had my doubts awhile ago about Elizabeth Banks, but I'm sold now. She looks perfect. The way the light falls on her in this poster illustrates everything that is....EFFIE!

Nay: No nay here!

Yay: :'( ::sniff:: I.......I......::falls to knees:: RUUUUUUUUUUUUE!!!!!!

Yay: I think Cato looks pretty cool here. I like the idea that he's not super evil looking, just....confident. He knows he's got it in the bag and I think that shows on his face in this poster.

Nay: No nay here!

That's all folks! Those are my thoughts! Now, don't forget to tune in tonight 10 ET/ 7 PT for a very special episode of the HGFiresideChat. They will be talking about the posters! Unfortunately I'll be working so I won't be able to live tweet with you all. Enjoy the podcast for me!

Panem October Vs. The Capitol.PN

Panem October
About 6 months after becoming part of the Hunger Games fan online community, I got this mysterious message:

Thus began a frenzy to find out what district you were in. What did it mean? Would we be reaped? Soon after we were all signed up, more people found out via source page another site: welcometopanem.com. In May, we could go to a Mellark Bakery site and order bread. Curiosity buzzed around the fan community, and more and more people every day signed up for tesserae, all wondering what might hold for us in October. Meanwhile on Tumblr, people by the hundreds started following our blog simply for the name.

I started F****YeahDistrict12 as only a Hunger Games blog, but oddly enough those who got put in District 12 on Panem October started reporting for duty. Having all these followers land in my lap, I started fighting back, rallying other people to stand up against those known as "GamemakersAnon". This sparked a war of rallying on our side, secret poems and threatening message on their side. It was a thrilling, mysterious experience.

Oh, how the Gamemakers have changed. Or have they? Just because they aren't leaving us threatening messages, doesn't mean they've given up on us. They are still watching us. Still, we find @panemgovernment leaving us threatening tweets (as that's where I spend most of my time nowadays. Rowan has even "graced" us with his presence on the HG Fireside Chat (which is on tonight, don't miss it!). Panem October is reaching more and more Hunger Games fans every day.

Finally, October is here and we have gotten the first glimpse of the Panem October experience. It's very impressive for a fan-made ARG. There's still so much left of it uncover, yet there's a great deal you can do: friend each other, leave a Panem-oriented Facebook-like status, Panem Radio, and keep racking up scans of your Panem ID to reveal your district's website. Even with all this, there are still new features to be readily available and more parts of the website to uncover. Panem October is setting an extremely high bar.

TheCapitol.PN
When the first official Hunger Games teaser trailer came to a close, you could hear a haunting four note whistle that could only belong to Rue. In the bottom corner of the screen: #WhatsMyDistrict.

Soon after we were all directed to TheCapitol.PN, which was a whole bunch of mechanical noises and static. Little by little, day by day, the image became clearer. When the site opened, "WOW are those graphics cool!" I for one, was also extremely pleased by the official Hunger Games ARG URL. For those who don't know, other countries URLs end differently: .UK, .JP, etc. The fact that this one ends in .PN is GENIUS. GENIUS!

Still, this whole thing is mysterious. Now many of us are trying to expedite our DIPs for our districts. Why? Uh, why not? I don't know about you, but I want to see what the official Hunger Games ARG has to offer. They've also enlisted one lucky twitter member per district to be a District Recruiter. My good twitter friend @JeamieMarie got chosen for District 7 recruiter, and thanks to her efforts, they've already achieved their DIPs (Come on, District 4 get a move on!).

I guess we will just have to wait and see what exactly they have to offer.

PO or PN?
The fact that Lionsgate allowed these two to exist is a godsend. It really showed me that they actually do care about what fans want. I love that not only is Panem October allowed to flourish, but Lionsgate is making efforts to keep their ARG up to par. If not for PanemOctober launching, would TheCapitol.PN have started assigning recruiters as soon as they did? I'm not too sure, but it really seems that because Panem October exists, TheCapitol.PN is stepping up their game.

Verdict?
BOTH! These ARGs are creating more buzz for the Hunger Games, both the movie and the books. Clearly, PO and PN can live in harmony and both have the potential to offer great fan experiences. I say two is better than one.

Wait, there's more!
In case you haven't heard, the BEST Hunger Games podcast around airs tonight at 10 EST/7 PST. Tonight's topic: "Battle of the ARGs"
Make sure you guys listen to this one, as there will be discussion about both of these ARGs, along with some other great discussion topics. Also, live-tweet along with us and many other Hunger Games fans using the hashtag: #HGFiresideChat
