Mockingjay Part 2 / 4-Film Collection Blu-Ray Review

Mockingjay Part 2 is already out on digital release, but fans can own it on Blu-Ray TOMORROW, March 22nd. Deciding whether you buy the Blu-Ray or the full 4 Film Collection depends on how much you want to spend, honestly. Everything that's on the Mockingjay Part 2 Blu-ray also exists in the 4 film collection and then some. Let's go over what is in the 4 Film Collection that you cannot get anywhere else.

4-Film Collection
  • 12 Deleted Scenes from The Hunger Games
  • 1 Deleted Scenes from Catching Fire
  • 2 Featurettes "Picturing Panem" and "Capitol Cuisine"

The above is content that is completely new. When you buy the 4 Film Collection you are not only getting all the films, but also the many special features that each movie came with. If you're a superfan, you probably have seen all these special features already. However it might be worth it for you just for these deleted scenes from the older movies. When navigating the menu on the 4 Film special features disc, each brand new feature will have "never-before-seen" attached to it.

I highly recommend getting the 4 Film collection for those that have been fans since the first film. The fandom was pretty outraged when we got no deleted scenes on the first Blu-Ray. Sources we talked to kept saying "the version Gary showed us was pretty much the version we went with". We knew that was probably an exaggeration and that Lionsgate was holding on to something for a box set version of the movies in the future. Now that we are here, we are quite glad that fans are able to finally see these deleted scenes, OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY, and get a little closure on the deleted scene fiasco in 2012.

We live and breathe special features, and it's never too much in our opinion. We wish that there were more "extra" special features to be had in this box set, but the reality might just be that is all that was shot. Still, we are grateful that we have the opportunity to own a complete collection of every single Hunger Games film and special features.

Mockingjay Part 2 Blu-Ray

At the very least fans should be getting Mockingjay Part 2 on Blu-Ray. There are some great special features and quite a challenge for fans looking for Easter Eggs. We always report on how to access the Blu-Ray Easter Egg, and this one has three deleted scenes hidden in it. To access the Mockingjay Part 2 Easter Egg, you can check it out HERE.

Audio Commentary

As always the Blu-Ray offers audio commentary from Francis Lawrence and Nina Jacobson. For those fans wanting to learn everything they can about behind the scenes information on Part 2, definitely don't miss the commentary. They touch on aspects that are in the book that aren't in the film, citing reasons to why they couldn't. Some interesting facts are that the main reason the wedding happens in the film is that they didn't want to deny fans of that moment. As much as they were dying to put more Johanna in the film they could not for fear of the film losing momentum. A lot of insight into Katniss' character going into this last film. Fans who are anxious to learn more will definitely enjoy the audio commentary.

Pawns No More

This 8-Part documentary is a lot of behind the scenes action in Mockingjay Part 2. They spend a lot of it talking about the story of The Hunger Games as a whole, so it takes awhile before it starts getting into the interesting bits of production. There are some cool things to see such as stunts, explosions, the sets, effects, etc. There is a lot to see, and maybe I am spoiled by 3 hour special feature Blu-Rays, but it seems like the Mockingjay Part 1 Blu-Ray documentary caught a lot more action and on set shenanigans than in Mockingjay Part 2. This could just be a logistics issue, maybe they just didn't have the time or means to capture as many moments for part two seeing how they filmed the whole Mockingjay story at once. Having said that, the documentary is still a great addition to the special features Lionsgate has come out with for every film. Fans will love watching Pawns No More, and maybe even tear up at the very sentimental conclusion of the documentary.

Featurettes

Featurettes include "Photographic Journey", "Secrets of the Mockingjay Armor", "Panem on Display" and "Jet to the Set". If you haven't been to The Hunger Games Exhibition, "Panem on Display" is a nifty section to watch. If you have been, it won't be anything new to you. My favorite of the featurettes is "Secrets of the Mockingjay Armor". They do talk about it in Mockingjay Part 1 special features, but I can't get over how spectacularly they build the Mockingjay suit for accuracy and function. It gives fans a little more information than mentioned in the Part 1 special features about how they developed the suit and the changes it went through. "Jet to the Set" is exclusive to the Blu-Ray, but it is not our cup of tea. It looks like a tourism video, a very celebrity Hollywood look at filming spots in Atlanta and things to do there. It does not really feel like a special feature, more so a very Capitol presentation of Atlanta. But hey, some people are into that.

What do?

What do indeed, tributes. Luckily there are tons of ways to own either the 4 Film Collection or just the Mockingjay Part 2 Blu-Ray digitally. There are tons of options on the official site HERE. Personally, I prefer physical Blu-Rays that include a digital copy of what you're getting. I recommend getting the 4-Film collection because not only does it provide you with all the films, special features, plus even more special features, but also gives you codes to own everything digitally. Either way, you're getting some awesome special features to enjoy in addition to Mockingjay Part 2. Enjoy!

Mockingjay Part 2 Blu-Ray EASTER EGG! - Complete code list!

Here we are again, another Blu-Ray release means another hunt for hidden easter eggs!

Thanks to Quarter Quell and @SnowMustFall for figuring out how to access the hidden deleted scenes. In addition to your Mockingjay Part 2 Blu-Ray (out March 22nd, though some have had it sent early), you're also going to need the Mockingjay Part 1 Blu-Ray.

When you put the Part 2 Blu-Ray in, click the BLUE button on your remote during Lionsgate logo when the top menu animation begins. Keep pressing it until something happens and the above image will show up. You will be given three random character codes to input. Each code is for an extra deleted scene.

These codes can be found on Mockingay Part 1 Blu-ray. It's a combination of codes on the side of the menu that cycle through character stills on both the rebel menu and the capitol menu. There's also a chance you might get Antonius, which can only be found on the pop-up menu when the movie is playing.

We've spared you the trouble of restarting your blu-ray over and over by providing you guys with a complete list of all the character codes:

Katniss - DK498T
Egeria - 5PC4WT
Gale - JH3491
Haymitch - W0DH5N
Caesar Flickerman - KM603E
Prim - MGK67I

Beetee - O8ER3M
Pollux - SQ3994
Johanna - 5O0YU3
Mesalla - 38KG04

Unlocking the three character codes gets you three deleted scenes:

1. Katniss video chat with Haymitch - "We made a deal to save him, remember?"

2. Star Squad looting for food in Capitol apartment

3. Katniss sewing up Gale's wound, Tigris' basement

MJ Part 2 Countdown BEGINS!

HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS, TRIBUTES.

The continuation of our Mockingjay Countdown series is finally here for part 2 and..... it's very sad. Here we are, counting down the last Hunger Games movie. Seems like not too long ago, we were having book discussions on Tumblr and the rights had just been bought by Lionsgate. In honor of the last book, we kicked off this series where we examined the book chapter by chapter and created some kind of "art". We did some cool, silly, and weird things last year and we hope this time is no different! If you would like to check out chapters 1-12, please read our series from last year. Every week we will be posting a chapter starting from 13, and by the time we reach the end, the movie's release will be within a week.  We proudly present the Mockingjay Part 2 Countdown.

CHAPTER 13

What do you get when you mix our love of cats, Mockingjay, and morbid humor?  The Catniss Cone of Shame. In the beginning of Ch 13, Katniss is dealing with a cold and obnoxious collar from her injuries that Peeta inflicted, which inspired the above drawing. WE LIKE CATS, OKAY?! So let's examine what else happens in this chapter...

The first few pages pretty much go over what the end of Mockingjay Part 1 explained, and the film did a pretty good job of addressing what a hijacking was. We see Prim becoming a well adjusted adult, followed by a seemingly harmless scene with Beetee and Gale designing war traps. WEE-OOO WEEE-OOO not an innocent scene in the slightest! Book readers are well aware of of how important this scene is, and I trust Francis completely to leave it in. If you're reading along with us, you will notice how painfully specific the human traps are described. It's another one of Suzanne's great discussion points: How far is too far?

The last big event in this chapter is the first interaction with Peeta since the incident. I think most people assume Delly Cartwright will not make an appearance in the film, but when it comes to Francis I always give him the benefit of the doubt. I am interested to see who they will substitute for Delly if she is cut out, or perhaps they will jump right to the Katniss interaction for time reasons. Either way, the scene is going to be unsettling seeing Peeta perceiving Katniss as a creation of The Capitol, not the girl he's grown up loving. Rereading this chapter is all the more intense reliving all of Katniss' emotions in her confused state. We've been with Katniss on her entire journey again and again, and experienced it through film over the last five years. Now that the films are ending, I can't help but feel Katniss' emotion ten times over as she realizes that Peeta has been conditioned to forget he loves her and even more horrifying-- that his true self might never return. Tissues, please.

Mockingjay Part 2 at Comic-Con 2015

San Diego Comic-Con was last week and the whole Welcome to District 12 team was there to soak up all of the Mockingjay goodness!! We camped out every night, and captured all we could of Mockingjay's last presence at the con. If you haven't already, make sure you check out our post about the Mockingjay Part 2 panel complete with photo gallery, which has lots of adorable cast moments.

Inside this edition, we will go over what the Lionsgate booth had to offer and take a look at some totally rad cosplay we found around the convention!

Lionsgate Booth

It seems as if Lionsgate has finally got the hang of their booth design in terms of crowd control. A couple years ago, the booth had to get shut down several times due to Mockingjay pin mobs. That didn't seem to be the case this year, at least in our experience. Whenever there was a freebie line happening it could get long (sometimes wrapping around the whole booth more than once), but you could always get to the back of the line and the wait was reasonable.

Freebies

Lionsgate gave a lot of mini posters for their various films coming out soon, including the war paint portraits for Mockingjay Part 2. Every freebie giveaway was different in terms of which war paint mini poster they gave out, but the most coveted item was the newest ringless Mockingjay pin.

Mockingjay Part 2 PIN!!
Lionsgate poster freebies

We managed to pick up some extras so hopefully, we will have a giveaway soon?

Mockingjay Photo Booth

Tiffany sending the rebellion her information!

The photo booth allowed SDCC goers to get their Mockingjay war paint and send it to their socials. Using XBOX Kinect, fans used the three finger salute to select their affiliation and pose for the camera. After this step, fans entered their information to be emailed their photo and chose whether or not they wanted their photo to be included in a massive fan poster. Here's how ours turned out:

Courtney
Tiffany

Denise
Janine

Lionsgate did an excellent job with their booth for the last Hunger Games installment. It was well designed for large crowds, Mockingjays everywhere, and with rebel soldiers stationed at all times:

Lastly, Lionsgate added one last small touch that might have gone unnoticed by some convention goers. If you waited in line for the photo booth, the overflow line went along the convention center wall. When you got towards the front of the line, the staff had to communicate to each other when to send a few people from the wall into the normal line amidst the busy foot traffic. The staff used THE THREE FINGER SALUTE to signal when to send more people over to the photo booth line. I was just beside myself when I witnessed this, and I give Lionsgate major props for being so creative and faithful in terms of how the booth was run. It's too bad that Mockingjay won't have a presence at SDCC next year.

COSPLAYERS

We only managed to spot a few dedicated hard core cosplayers at the convention, but that doesn't mean that there weren't tons there! We saw hordes of fans sporting Hunger Games gear, but here are a few that really caught our eye:

Meet Caroline, Katie, and Brandon and their EPIC cosplay! These guys camped out with all the other fans for the MJ panel in Hall H!
We caught these guys when we were in a rush so we didn't get their names, but DANG look at that Mockingjay dress!
Comic Con 2015 was a blast, and we're sad we will no longer be celebrating the movies at the con, but there will always be cosplayers representing for years to come!

Mockingjay Part 2 Teaser and Poster - "Remember"

Click poster for high res!

This morning, EW posted the official Mockingjay Part 2 poster and teaser to be shown before Insurgent which comes into theatres this Friday. If you live in the U.S., Canada, or the UK you'll be able to see the teaser!

The teaser is, as we expected, the cycle of Mockingjay logos from the beginning. What's different this time around is the array of quotes from past films leading into a brand new one:
"Tonight, turn your weapons to the Capitol."

Also, if you check out the nice high res poster for the teaser, you'll find a new tagline: "The Fire Will Burn Forever." We're glad that teaser at least has a new quote for the fans to get excited about, but the new tagline is a little curious. Hopefully we will get a little more explanation behind this new tagline in future trailers, but for now we will just enjoy the fact that at long last something Mockingjay Part 2 has been released.

Mockingjay Part 1 Blu-Ray: Easter Egg, Review, and GIVEAWAY

We've got all the information you need to know about the Mockingjay Part 1 Blu-Ray right here, thanks to Lionsgate sending us a few copies as well as some to GIVEAWAY!!! Head down to the end of the post for giveaway details.

It's been a dry spell for us for sure since Mockingjay Part 1 in theaters flew away, and for me (Courtney specifically) I just haven't been in the Hunger Games spirit. I was so jazzed with how Mockingjay Part 1 came out, and I even had prepared to come out with our yearly score analysis (don't worry, it's coming!) and just never finished it. Such a bummer. However, everything has changed since we were able to enjoy the fruits of the Mockingjay Part 1 Blu-Ray. It is so jam-packed with behind-the-scenes, it catapulted me right back into Hunger Games Mania.

“I’m thrilled Mockingjay – Part 2 will be in IMAX theaters,” said director Francis Lawrence. “Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of Mockingjay – Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic.”

“It’s exciting to be back in The Hunger Games world and once again team up with our partners at Lionsgate, director Francis Lawrence and producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik on what we believe will be a thrilling, action-packed finale to this blockbuster franchise,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “The fan enthusiasm and cultural impact that this series has generated has been truly remarkable and we are thrilled to offer audiences the opportunity to experience the last chapter in IMAX 3D.”

The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
The blockbuster Hunger Games franchise has taken audiences by storm around the world, grossing more than $2.2 billion at the global box office, and it was the #1 movie of the year two years in a row domestically. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 now brings the franchise to its powerful fourth chapter in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) now fully realizes the stakes are no longer just for survival -- they are for the future.

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her.  The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Peter Craig and Danny Strong and features an acclaimed cast including Academy Award®-winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone with Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland reprising their original roles from The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The impressive lineup is joined by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 co-stars five-time Academy Award®-nominee Julianne Moore, Mahershala Ali, Natalie Dormer, Wes Chatham, Elden Henson and Evan Ross.
###

The District 13 Schematic Bandana

Doesn't Effie's Bandana look familiar?
This weekend our team received an interesting parcel from the District 13 rebels. It came with a letter and a grey bandana with a schematic of District 13 on it. Super cool, right? Well that's all it appeared to us at first. I must apologize for us not seeing this sooner, we haven't seen any Mockingjay Doritos yet so we never even tried the Our Leader the Mockingjay app functionality. Sure it's cool to put Mockingjays all over town, but the District 13 Schematic function is OUT OF THIS WORLD.

care package from District 13 rebels
First of all, you do not need this bandana to check out the District 13 Schematic function. You can just as easily print it out using the app or for your convenience we have provided the direct link to the schematic below. So you need three things: a bag of Mockingjay Doritos, a print out of the schematic, and your device with the app.

Yup, this is what it looks like folks. Open the app and click on District 13 Schematic in the list at the bottom of the screen. You focus the camera at the CENTER of District 13 and when prompted you can move the camera back into a more comfortable position. It is best if it is completely flat and you are in a well lit room. Once you settle in, District 13 will come alive through your camera.

Keep your pets away because you know as soon as you set your physical schematic down on the floor that dog/cat will be on it faster than arrows to Coins. Or you know, someone being a dick and Godzilla-ing all over your shit.

Don't let your loved ones do this to you!!

You can swipe between three levels of character profiles, location labels, and the jawdropping cool 3D rooms. You can explore The Collective, Special Weapons,  Living Quarters, and The Courtyard. You may look silly spinning around in circles to see every square inch of a room, but its totally worth it.
