Hunger Games News Roundup

We've got some little bits of news here and there that we thought we'd put them all in a nice round-up post!

First off, check out this sweet new IMAX poster, debuted by Wired! Generally, IMAX posters tend to be more artistic and creatively designed and this one is no different.

Next up, another video from the Camp Mockingjay interview with Josh Horowitz has been released, this time with Josh and Jennifer recreating the nightlock scene in The Hunger Games with roles reversed!

Lastly, the event mentioned in the Samsung/Lionsgate press release with the VR experience debut in New York started today, with Jena Malone in attendance at the party. See the invitation below for details.

According to QuarterQuell.org, the full VR experience will be available for download on Monday for the Samsung Gear VR, if you have that sort of thing, and will eventually be available for iOS, Android, and Oculus Rift.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2” SOARS INTO IMAX® 3D THEATERS STARTING NOVEMBER 20

SANTA MONICA, Calif., February 6, 2015 – IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) and Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a premier next generation global content leader, today announced that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the next installment of the global blockbuster Hunger Games franchise, will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® format and released in IMAX® 3D theaters domestically for the film’s November 20th rollout.

“I’m thrilled Mockingjay – Part 2 will be in IMAX theaters,” said director Francis Lawrence. “Fans will now have the chance to see the film in any format they want, which is exciting; we recently saw the 3-D version of Mockingjay – Part 1 before its release in China, and the new level of immersion was really fantastic.”

“It’s exciting to be back in The Hunger Games world and once again team up with our partners at Lionsgate, director Francis Lawrence and producers Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik on what we believe will be a thrilling, action-packed finale to this blockbuster franchise,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “The fan enthusiasm and cultural impact that this series has generated has been truly remarkable and we are thrilled to offer audiences the opportunity to experience the last chapter in IMAX 3D.”

The IMAX® 3D version of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX® DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
The blockbuster Hunger Games franchise has taken audiences by storm around the world, grossing more than $2.2 billion at the global box office, and it was the #1 movie of the year two years in a row domestically. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 now brings the franchise to its powerful fourth chapter in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) now fully realizes the stakes are no longer just for survival -- they are for the future.

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her.  The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Peter Craig and Danny Strong and features an acclaimed cast including Academy Award®-winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone with Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland reprising their original roles from The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The impressive lineup is joined by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 co-stars five-time Academy Award®-nominee Julianne Moore, Mahershala Ali, Natalie Dormer, Wes Chatham, Elden Henson and Evan Ross.

The Coolest IMAX Poster EVER!!

At first I didn't think this was real, but then was reminded that the Official Hunger Games Facebook page posted about the release of the official IMAX poster for Catching Fire. It's epic, it's artsy, it's MIND BLOWING!!

Check out what Badass Digest had to say who released the poster:

" IMAX posters tend to be a little cooler than the normal one sheets because they're not the main marketing art for the movie. IMAX posters get to have a little bit of fun, and for many films in the last few years the IMAX poster has been the most memorable bit of art. That could be true for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. We're proud to debut this awesome, intricate, Baroque poster, which is inspired by the work of Kris Kuksi.
Kuksi, who has apparently given his blessing to this image riffing on his work, which Guillermo del Toro describes thusly:
Kris Kuksi obsessively arranges characters and architecture in asymmetric compositions with an exquisite sense of drama. Instead of stones and shells he uses screaming plastic soldiers, miniature engine blocks, towering spires and assorted debris to form his landscapes. The political, spiritual and material conflict within these shrines is enacted under the calm gaze of remote deities and august statuary. Kuksi manages to evoke, at once, a sanctum and a mausoleum for our suffocated spirit.
Fantastic Realism is the genre in which he works, and writer Jen Pappas has described Kuksi's style as “a study in timelessness and intricacies, reminiscent of lost civilizations, deities and ruins – perfectly preserved.” All of that says Panem to me, a civilization built on the ruins of an old one, using the debris of the old to make something new and strange and screwed up. "

We're just kind of in awe over this. BEST. POSTER. EVER.

Arena Scenes Shot in IMAX?!

According to Josh Hutcherson, the arena scenes will be shot in IMAX! MTV recently posted a video with Josh Horowitz interviewing Hutcherson, which you can check out below:

"They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing, and the way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water — it looks incredible," he gushed. "I've seen some of the CG renderings that [director] Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great."
But the morsel fans will savor most is what Hutcherson had to say about the portions being filmed in IMAX.
Following a winning run for "The Hunger Games" in IMAX theaters (despite not being shot in the large format), Lionsgate announced in June that the follow-up would feature scenes filmed specifically for the big big screens, though did not divulge specifics.
"They're shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX," Hutcherson said. "So when you go see it in IMAX, you'll see the regular movie when we're in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It's very cool."
Although it is slightly disappointing the whole movie has not been shot in IMAX, I really think there is something truly creative about the idea of just the arena scenes in IMAX. It's quite a nifty audience immersing tool, as the video mentions connecting the idea to a "Wizard of Oz" moment. Isn't it cool we are getting more and more details about Catching Fire?
